Grandma March Day (or simply Baba Marta) is a holiday celebrated in Bulgaria. It is celebrated on the 1st of March.
This year Baba Marta welcomed all students and teachers from school "Ivan Vazov" at the school door, again. She gave all of them “martenitsi”. On the 1st of March, Bulgarians give the friends and the members of family white and red amulets, called “martenitsa”.
“Martenitsa” are worn on that day and through March (until a stork or a bloomed tree is seen) to symbolize warmer weather and well being. Old Bulgarians call it Birch Month, because it was around the time when birch trees start to grow leaves and give a sap.
