On June 14, 2012 in Sopot Minister of Defense - Anyu Angelov discovered a monument of Major-General Georgi Vazov and Major-General Vladimir Vazov. The memorial complex was placed next to their native house at the town center. It consists of two busts of Bulgarian generals presented in their military uniforms. The monuments are work of the sculptor Dishko Dishkov. They are built with the assistance from the Ministry of Defence and with some donations from citizens. The monument consecrated His Reverence Archimandrite Arsenii. Representatives of state and local governments, citizens and guests attended at the ceremony. A representative group of students and teachers from "Ivan Vazov" Secondary School participated in the celebration. We paid tribute to these two worthy Bulgarians with flowers and a minute of silence.
Lieutenant -General Georgi Vazov is one of the most glorious generals in the history of the Bulgarian army. In 1913, during the Balkan War, he led the advance of Allied troops in the eastern sector and participated in the capture of the first forts of Edirne - Ayvazbaba and Aydjioolu and in the capture of Shukri Pasha. Lieutenant -General Georgi Vazov was Minister of Defense from June 28, 1913 to August 22, 1913 His brother, Major- General Vladimir Vazov, also participated in the Balkan wars. His greatest military success was during the First World War in 1918 when, as a commander of the 9th Pleven Division he organized successful defense of the Doiran position. |
